What is FortZED?

FortZED was born from the UniverCity Connections Sustainable Energy Taskforce as a vision to create a net-zero energy district in the Fort Collins’ UniverCity area. Fort Collins will demonstrate visionary leadership, create substantial economic development and be at the forefront of social change through a bold commitment to “Net Zero Energy.”

"ZERO ENERGY DISTRICT" DEFINED: A Zero Energy District is one that creates as much thermal and electrical energy locally as it uses within the built environment. “Locally” is defined as a 50-mile radius around the district. FortZED is committed to using clean, renewable energy.

THE VISION OF FortZED:
Energy consumption is growing faster than population growth, and energy costs are increasing even faster. This graph highlights how to reach Net Zero: reduce energy demand through increased efficiency and conservation, and develop renewable power (i.e. wind, solar) to match the need. Energy savings have the added benefit of reducing utility expenses.

Energy users include residences, small businesses, large businesses, government institutions, and CSU. Restaurants are intense users of energy, and increased utility prices affect a business’s net profits. FortZED will work to improve restaurant efficiency (click here for more information on the Green Restaurant Initiative), and then apply the program model to office space and retail space. A residential program is also in our future.
